Well, my oh my, this peanut butter frosting is the stuff dreams are made of. It's exceptionally rich and creamy (hello butter and cream), not too sweet, and bursting with peanut butter flavor. All that and it only takes 5 minutes to make.

This five minute frosting is my new obsession. Besides the fact that I love peanut butter, I don't like frosting that's too sweet, which if I'm honest, is most kinds of frosting.
But not this one. For most frosting and buttercream recipes, sugar not only adds sweetness, it thickens the frosting to a spreadable consistency.
This is not the case for peanut butter frosting because peanut butter is already thick enough to spread over whatever you wish. Because of this, we are free to add as much or as little sugar as we like.
In addition to peanut butter, this recipe includes butter and cream which, as you might image, makes it exceptionally rich and creamy, and light as air.
And, as if I didn't love this recipe enough, it only takes about 5 minutes to prepare. Five minutes to peanut butter soaked bliss, that's what this is.
If you think I'm being dramatic, whip up a batch and see for yourself.

Ingredients needed to prepare this recipe

Just 7 ingredients is all you need to make a batch of peanut butter frosting:
- Powdered sugar
- Creamy peanut butter
- Butter, salted or unsalted, at room temperature
- Vanilla extract
- Almond extract (optional)
- Salt
- Heavy cream
A note about salt
I feel that most sweet treats need considerably more salt than most recipes call for. As such, most of the baked goods on this site call for more salt than you might expect.
Salt doesn't just make food taste salty. It brings out the flavor of the other ingredients. For example, a sprinkle of salt over a tomato doesn't make the tomato taste like salt. It makes the tomato taste more like a tomato.
Salt does the same thing for sweet foods as it does for savory foods. And in this recipe, it's especially important. Peanut butter needs salt in order to not taste bland. A generous amount of salt will give you the most intense peanut butter flavor.
I like to use salted butter and an additional ยฝ to 1 teaspoon of salt. How much you use is up to you. If you want total control over how much salt you add, use unsalted butter and add additional salt bit by bit. As always, start with a small-ish amount, taste, and add as much as what tastes good to you.
Two steps to peanut butter frosting
1. Add the powdered sugar, peanut butter, butter, vanilla extract, almond extract, and salt to a bowl and beat until light and creamy, about 2 minutes. Stop the mixer every once in a while to scrape down the sides of the bowl.

2. With the mixer running, pour in the heavy cream. Continue beating until all the cream has been blended in and the frosting is thick and spreadable. Taste and add more sugar if you'd like it to be sweeter or more salt and/or extracts if you feel it tastes bland.

My favorite ways to use peanut butter frosting
I created this recipe specifically for this banana snack cake because peanut butter and bananas are made for each other.

And also for Chocolate Snack Cake because, chocolate and peanut butter are also made for each other.

But seeing as this might be my new favorite frosting of all time, I've begun dreaming of all the other cakes I might spread it on. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.
How to store this frosting
Store peanut butter frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Allow the frosting to come to room temperature before using then beat with an electric mixer for 30 seconds or so to restore it's fluffy, creamy texture.
Peanut butter frosting can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Store it in an airtight container. Allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight then beat the frosting with an electric mixer for a minute or two before using.
