Ways to Use this Easy Berry Sauce
First, let me say that there's no end to the list of desserts and breakfast and brunch-y treats that couldn't be made better with a large spoonful of this quick berry sauce. But here are a few of my favorite ways to use it:
- Spoon it over Chocolate Ricotta Cake (pictured here) or Chocolate Loaf Cake.
- As a waffle, french toast, or pancake topping! I love, love, love to top a stack of my favorite buttermilk pancakes with giant spoonfuls of this berry sauce. So good!
- Spoon it over slices of pound cake or vanilla loaf cake.
- Layer it inside flaky buttermilk biscuits along with some sweetened whipped cream for a tasty version of berry shortcake!
- Serve it as a topping for New York Cheesecake.
- Spoon it over slices of Pistachio Cardamom Cake.
- And, of course, this berry sauce makes a delicious ice cream topping!
Ingredients Needed to Prepare this Recipe
- Fresh or frozen berries - any kind or combination
- Granulated white sugar
- Salt - just a pinch intensifies the flavor of the berries
- Lime juice and zest from one or two fresh limes
- Sumac! This is optional but I'd love to convince you to try this recipe with sumac in it just once. Sumac is a gorgeous Middle Eastern spice that's citrusy and tart with some subtle sweet and floral notes. Sumac can be used in both savory and sweet dishes. Use it as you would lemon juice - to wake food up and add bright, fresh, citrus flavor.
Step-by-Step Photos and Instructions
Making this berry sauce is a super simple 2-step process:
#1. Make a super quick berry coulis by pureeing some of the berries with sugar, salt, lime, juice, and sumac. You can use either a blender or a food processor to do this.
#2. Pour the berry puree over the rest of the fresh berries and gently stir until all the berries are coated in the puree.
Sprinkle in some lime zest now if you like. Or, save the lime zest to sprinkle over the top of the sauce after spooning it over whatever dessert you plan to use it on.

Easy Berry Sauce with Fresh or Frozen Berries
It doesn't get any easier than this 10-minute berry sauce. Use whatever kind or combination of berries you like, fresh or frozen, to make this delicious dessert sauce that's bursting with the flavor of ripe, juicy berries.
Ingredients
- 5 - 6 cups (900 grams) of any kind or combination of berries, fresh or frozen berries
- ⅔ cup (66 grams) granulated white sugar
- ¼ - ½ teaspoon salt (to taste)
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
- 1 - 2 tablespoon ground sumac (optional)
- 1 - 2 teaspoons lime zest
Instructions
- If using fresh berries, rinse well in cold water. If using frozen berries, allow the berries to thaw at room temperature. They don't need to be completely thawed - just soft enough to be able to puree some of them in a blender or food processor.
- Add about ⅓ of the berries to a blender or food processor along with the sugar, salt, lime juice, and sumac. Process until smooth.
- Add the remaining berries to a large bowl and pour the berry puree over them. Gently stir until all the berries are coated with the puree. Sprinkle the lime zest into the berry sauce or save the zest to sprinkle over the top of the sauce after spooning it onto whatever dessert you plan to use it on.
Notes
- There's no need to be super precise with the amount of berries you use in this recipe. Aim for approximately 5 or 6 cups which will amount to about 900 grams.
- Sumac is a gorgeous Middle Eastern spice that's citrusy and tart with some subtle sweet and floral notes. It's absolutely delicious in this berry sauce but is optional.
- Store this berry sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. The sauce can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Allow the sauce to thaw before using.
